Reina de Patzún

Description:

You are looking at la "Reina de Patzún", the queen of Patzún. She is a Rabin Ajaw. The Rabin Ajaw is a festival that takes place every year in Guatemala. Every town appoints a young woman to represent them, each of them has a crown with motifs that represent their region.

The town of Patzún is nestled in the Guatemalan highlands, they are known for being the breadbasket of the country. Her crown is adorned with images of corn, the staple crop of the continent. She is an indigenous woman, donning her traditional garb, her crown a symbol of pertinence and defiance to the centuries of colonialism by the spanish rule and foreign intervention. She is a woman in a country ruled by the whims of men; she is indigenous,  in a country in which you are treated as a second class citizen by those in economic power. What she has is her people, her corn, her traditions, and her pride.
She is a queen as much as any other, by birthright.
